VOTING RIGHTS

The Cause

Modernizing elections to help build a democracy where all of our voices are heard

At our nation’s founding, voting was enshrined only for educated white men who owned property. It took more than a century for the franchise to meaningfully expand to people of color, women, people with disabilities, people who are low-income, and Native Americans. Today, some elected leaders are still working to silence people who were historically denied access to the ballot box.

Instead of cowering to the voting-related conspiracy theories, hateful rhetoric, and the anti-civil rights policies of the Trump administration, we raised our voices to defend the America we all deserve. We helped to bolster those leading efforts to enact the type of federal voting rights legislation that will provide everyone an opportunity to cast a ballot and have that ballot count.

The Content

Our voting rights work sought to inform the public, decision-makers, and the media about barriers to voting and advocate for policies that expand the right to vote, especially in communities of color. We spoke loud and clear: the ability to cast your ballot is a racial justice issue. It is a civil rights issue. And we are overdue for a change.

Contributions included:

  • 2018 midterms content – Our video became a cathartic rallying cry for those who had been taking to the streets for two years straight. None of their hard work would matter unless they also exercised their right to vote.
  • Good Trouble vigils – Working in direct partnership with John Lewis’ family and foundation, our team played a key role pulling off coordinated vigils in 163 locations nationwide. I think Congressman Lewis would have been proud.
  • Issue-based explainer content, social, reports, & rallies – In a saturated ecosystem where people are being told to “go vote!” 100 times throughout their day, it’s an even harder task to try and explain the actual complexities of voting rights itself. Not to mention trying to get them to care, engage, and get involved in our efforts to help ensure all voters even can “go vote!”
