MIVoted

The Cause

Turning out the vote in Michigan by making sure every MI voter knows there are now officially more ways to vote than ever before

During the pandemic, many voters in America gained access to new and equitable voting methods for the first time. This led to record-breaking voter turnout in 2020, marking some of the most transparent and accurate elections in our nation’s history.

In response to this expanded access to democracy, a wave of anti-voter extremists, fearful of progress, began to stoke fear and mistrust among voters in an attempt to roll back ballot access. But passionate communities, election officials, legislators, and voting rights advocates are fighting against the many threats at every turn and landing major wins for voters, especially in Michigan.

In 2022, Michiganders overwhelmingly voted to expand voting rights by increasing voting options in their state: four voting methods became enshrined in the state’s constitution! But with great democracy comes great responsibility. In 2024, all eyes were on Michigan. Anti-democratic forces were not only hoping for Michigan’s expanded voting options to fail but actively planning attempts to create confusion and doubt – so we decided to get out in front of the drama and set a pro-voter tone for the rest of the country.

The Content

The MIVoted campaign was a dynamic and layered voter advocacy program with the goal of informing Michiganders about their new voting options, trusting voters to choose the best voting method for their lifestyle, and making it easier for them to follow through with their voting method of choice to make their vote a reality.

Beyond voter ed. Beyond creating beautiful, shareable, easy-to-understand resources in support of Michigan’s election officials. At its core, MIVoted was a bold strategy to come out swinging in the face of impending election sabotage. We wanted to create a new statewide (and nationwide!) vibe that all 4 voting methods are equally easy, patriotic, and trustworthy. It’s just about finding what method suits you best.

Contributions included:

  • Pre-roll ad series – Proving to be the org’s best-performing ads by far, these videos not only looked cool but were explicitly written to stop people from hitting the skip button. But the best part: we were able to license a super cool track from Michigan musician and TikTok creator Curtis Roach.
  • Posters, print collateral x 5 languages, & swag giveaways – Working in close collaboration with a wide range of partners on the ground throughout Michigan, we created an avalanche of materials to be distributed by voting officials themselves and also for grassroots canvassing, college campus events, community outreach, voting parties, and more.
  • Wild postings & transit ads – Hard to miss and strategically placed throughout Detroit, our OOH buy was our last splash just before the start of early voting.
  • Website & sample social content – First things first: what type of voter vibe are you? Take our quiz, skim all the most crucial info relevant to your chosen voting method, and get a free swag pack so you can show off your MIVoter Vibe during election season. This message resonated with voters across the state, including a few influential voices spanning music, art, sports, radio personalities, and more.
